SeismicFactor FAQ
What is
SeismicFactor.com?
SeismicFactor.com is a web application (program) that simplifies the process of
determining the seismic coefficients for a building site. A time saving tool that allows the
user to
accurately
obtain tabulated, mapped, interpolated and calculated values in just few seconds.
The produced table can be pasted or sticky-backed on the plans since the code
(IBC 1603.1.5) requires that earthquake design data be shown on plans.
How does SeismicFactor.com work?
Once a valid address is entered, the program will determine the latitude and
longitude using Google maps. Upon obtaining the latitude and longitude, the
program will then determine Ss and S1. Ss and S1 are then used in the
computations.
How does SeismicFactor.com get Ss and S1?
Seismicfactor.com interpolates the USGS 2003 underlying data to determine Ss and
S1.
Fa and Fv do not match the values in my code book, Why?
Fa and Fv may be interpolated according to the obtained Ss and S1 for greater
accuracy.
Does SeismicFactor.com use a zip code average to determine Ss and S1?
It does not. You must enter a complete valid address for SeismicFactor.com to
determine the S1 and Ss values.
Values obtained for Ss and S1 are site specific and not average zip code values.
Does SeismicFactor.com do code checks?
It does not. It merely does the computations according to what the user enters.
Code check is a complex process and sometimes a gray area in the code, it is left to
the professional engineer. For example, a structural system may only be
allowed in a certain seismic area under certain conditions, it is up to the engineer to
make that
determination and use a code allowed structural system and verify its
limitations..
Does SeismicFactor.com automatically determine TL?
It does, However, in case it cannot be determined, the user should check the
value manually and use the appropriate Csmax equation.
Does SeismicFactor.com automatically determine Site Class?
It does not. The site class is a characteristic of the site and soil, a
determination that should be made by a qualified soils engineer or use minimum
code prescribed site classification.
Does SeismicFactor.com use a simplified method.?
It does not.
What does it cost to use Seismicfactor.com?
It is absolutely free.
